Mystery surrounds the death of a murder suspect within the confines of a police cell even as police denied claims of foul play.
David Mwai, who was a key suspect in the attempted murder of former Garissa County Finance executive Idriss Mukhtar, is said to have hanged himself in his cell at Parklands police station.
This is where David Mwai who was arrested and locked up in this cell is said to have hanged himself using the lining of his jacket within the Parklands Police station.
Police spokesman Charles Owino accompanied by other senior officers took members of the press to the cell in a fact finding mission following uproar over the incident that family members claims could be foul play.
But Owino dismissed the claims as baseless saying the deceased excused himself to use the restrooms only for him to hang himself along the cell’s corridor.
The police spokesperson say it is too early to start pointing fingers as already an inquest into the incident has been launched and those detectives are piecing together evidence to establish the truth of the matter.
Mwai was among three suspects who were arrested over the attempted murder of former Garissa Finance CEC Idriss Muktar in Kileleshwa in an incident that also saw police interrogate Garissa governor Ali Korane who is said to be a person of interest.
Three vehicles were also impounded in connection with the attack.
