The cost of major goods and services eased to 5.7pc in March marking the first time inflation has fallen below 6pc in two years.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) says lower prices of foodstuffs drove the drop due to improved rainfall and the low cost of fuel which has eased in the last 3 months.
The report shows electricity and Kerosene prices fell by 2.3pc. The Transport Index also saw a 0.6pc decline in February-March 2024, driven by cheaper petrol and diesel prices.
The cost of the two commodities fell by 3.5pc and 2.6pc, respectively. However, despite the drop in fuel prices, the cost of liquefied petroleum gas increased by 1.4pc.
On food, carrot prices dropped by 2.8pc, maize grain prices fell by 4.9pc, while sugar prices dropped by 5.3pc.
The highest price increase in the food basket was onions whose price shot up from Ksh150.63 per Kg in February to Ksh167.28 per kilo in March.
