Instagram’s new update is met with mixed reactions

Instagram has changed its home screen for the first time in years.

If your Instagram is looking strange all of a sudden, it’s because the app has rolled out a new design for the home page. It has added a Reels tab and a Shop tab to the home screen. The Reels tab will take you to the short videos creators post and the Shop tab will take you to the products you seem to love to shop for, together with personalized recommendations. These tabs could previously be found on the explore page but are now front and centre on the navigation bar.

Reels is basically Instagram’s answer to TikTok. The TikTok app which is new-ish in the social media world is absolutely crushing it as a video-sharing platform. The app admits that the world is changing very quickly and how people share and consume information is changing with it, hence the need for the big change. “We don’t take these changes lightly – we haven’t updated Instagram’s home screen in a big way for quite a while. But how people create and enjoy culture has changed, and the biggest risk to Instagram is not that we change too fast, but that we don’t change and become irrelevant.” – Instagram shared on its official blog.

Change is never easy so of course many people are not comfortable with the new change. It’s a disruption to the whole scrolling business but may not necessarily be a bad thing. Let’s wait and see.
