Isiolo County Women Representative Rehema Dida Jaldesa has proposed an amendment of Section 43 of the Sexual Offences Act to introduce tougher punitive measures against sexual offenders, including castration to discourage the vice and protect children against abuse.
Addressing members of public in Isiolo during the launch of a programme dubbed ‘Wajibika’ that seeks to curb gender based violence, female genital mutilation and early marriages, Rehema said that she had already presented the amendment proposal to the speaker of the national assembly.
Rehema argued that it made no sense to hand a rapist a ten year sentence when he has already messed up the entire life of an innocent woman or girl.
She cited few cases where school girls had been abused by people who are supposed to protect them, with the cases being terminated through dialogue to avoid shaming the perpetrators.
The announcement however elicited mixed reactions with the County Governor Mohamed Kuti raising doubt on its support in parliament Isiolo County Women Representative Rehema Jaldesa however said that such matters should always be handled in a court of law.
