Isiolo leaders accuse security officers of protecting criminals

Leaders from Isiolo County have accused a section of police officers deployed in the area of protecting criminals who are terrorizing residents in the County.

The leaders now want Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to take appropriate action on the officers whom they accuse of supervising wanton destruction of property in Isiolo.

Led by area Governor Mohammed Kuti the leaders claim serious rift between security teams from Isiolo South and those from Lagdera in Garissa County have seen security levels deteriorate with 2 people reported to have lost their lives.

The County leadership now wants the National Government to intervene and calm tension among the locals following heightened fresh ethnic clashes in Modogashe, along the Isiolo-Garissa border.

Tension is still high in the area as both the Borana of Isiolo South and the Somali of Lagdera in Garissa County live in fear of similar attacks.

The leaders have accused security agencies over unfairness in execution of their duties and want Matiang’i to take appropriate action on negligent police officers.

Kuti claims protracted border row between the two Counties is the cause of recent ethnic clashes.

He wants the Interior Ministry to fast track the process of demarcation of the boundary in order to provide a lasting solution to the problem.

Last week, CS Matiang’i visited Isiolo County where he issued a stern warning to politicians who he accused of fuelling ethnic animosity.
