Kalonzo turns down Raila’s offer, announces own presidential bid

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has made good his threat to ditch the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

Kalonzo who made the big announcement Monday afternoon simultaneously with the unveiling of Raila Odinga’s running mate at KICC, declared that he will be on the ballot come August 9.

Addressing a presser at the SKM command centre, the former Vice President went ahead to pick Andrew Leteipa Sunkuli as his running mate, complying with IEBC timelines.

A disgruntled Kalonzo said he was not ashamed of his last-minute move after it become obvious that Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua was set to be unveiled as Raila’s preferred choice.

Kalonzo had hoped to clinch the number two slot but was relegated to the Chief Minister in the Azimio la Umoja government despite the President intervening in the matter.

Kalonzo who was flanked by KANU leader Gideon Moi admitted there were consultations with Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta but the ultimate decision to pick Karua was Raila’s.

“Some of us have suffered the effects of bad faith for far too long. For how long will we sacrifice and even if we sacrifice, they mess up. For how long will people be expecting Kalonzo to sacrifice? we will not allow this to continue we are set. It is never too late to come back” he quipped.

He said moving forward he will be negotiating for himself putting a disclaimer that his decision to exit Azimio should be viewed as a brotherly contest.

“We have been in full consultations, the final decision has been taken by the candidate himself Raila, and I wish him and Karua well. I made it very clear that the decision will be met with overwhelming opposition” he added.

He said the country needed an alternative and he was the best choice. He pledged to hit the campaign trail immediately after launching his manifesto.

“My name is before the IEBC as the Wiper Party Presidential Candidate,” he said.

He regretted that OKA had been messed up by the coalition arrangements but pledged that Wiper which he claimed is the third-largest party will work with Kanu leader and partner Moi.

” Kenyans need to reset their minds. I will be mute this week, to reflect and think because these are weight matters, I know people will rush out there do their blogging and call us names, but we will remain very firm. It’s a fact that Kenyans want an alternative and we win with OKA”  he promised.

He said his agenda roots for gender parity and a 24-hour economy.

Who is Sunkuli

Andrew Sunkli is not new to politics. The businessman and son of former Cabinet minister Julius Sunkuli had been eyeing the Narok gubernatorial seat. He was thrust into the limelight in 2013 election when he faced off with his brother Julius.

They both unsuccessfully ran for the senatorial seat. At the time, Julius Sunkuli, formally Kenyan ambassador to China resigned to vie for the seat on a TNA ticket where he garnered 51, 200 votes against his brother Andrew Sunkuli’s 77, 000 votes as an Independent candidate.
