Kenya and Burundi seek to deepen ties

Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza will not seek re-election in 2020, and is focusing on growing relations with larger East African economies, his special envoy said.

Special envoy Ezechiel Nibigira told President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi on Thursday that President Nkurunziza was concerned that Burundi remains safe and stable and its economy prospered.

“We are grateful to you personally and to Kenya for all the assistance with the peace process. The entire country is calmer now,” said Nibigira, who is Burundi’s Foreign Minister.

President Kenyatta said all Kenya wanted was to strengthen bilateral and regional relations with East African economies for the mutual benefit of East Africans.

Present at the meeting were Kenya’s CS for Foreign Affairs Amb. Dr Monica Juma and Head of Public Service Mr Joseph Kinyua.
