Kenya nominates CS Amina Mohamed for AU chair post

By John Kioria

President Uhuru Kenyatta has forwarded the name of Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed for consideration as Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

Mohammed will be a formidable candidate in the election slated for January having led a successful career in private and the public service.

According to President Kenyatta, Ambassador Mohammed has been championing for diplomacy in the various positions she has held making her the right candidate.

The election of chairperson aborted in July this year after the candidates offering themselves for the position failed to garner a two-thirds majority.

Amina will however have to square it out with Botswana’s Foreign Minister Pelonomi Venson Moitoi, his Equitorial Guinea counterpart Agapito Mba Mokuy, Specioza Wandira Kazibwe who is the former Ugandan vice president and Senegal’s Abdoulaye Bathily.

In her four years stint as Foreign Affairs CS, Mohammed has successfully lobbied for the hosting of major international meetings such as the Global Entrepreneurship Summit co-hosted by President Barack Obama, the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD), the Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development(TICAD) and the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa(AGRA) which was held in Kenya less than a  month ago.

Ambassador Mohammed has been at the forefront in fighting Kenya’s battles with the International Criminal Court when President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto were fighting to clear their names.

She successfully pushed that Kenya’s agenda for referral of the ICC cases be included on the Assembly of State parties’ agenda in the last meeting which at times put her into a collision course with civil society groups.

She is still the UNCTAD President having assumed the presidency in July when Kenya hosted the meeting and was to serve for a four year term.

And when history is written about Amina Chawahir Mohammed Jibril, her billing as one of the most effective cabinet secretaries in President Kenyatta’s cabinet will definitely feature.
