Kenya through to HSBC Sevens quarterfinals

By Richard Munga

The Kenya national rugby sevens team has qualified for the main cup quarterfinals of the 9th leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series after beating Russia 22-7 in their second pool ‘A’ match played Saturday in Paris, France.

After beating Portugal 29-14 in their first group match last night and a fixture against giants New Zealand yet to come, the Singapore sevens champions had to beat Russia to guarantee themselves a place in the main cup quarterfinal.

And unlike yesterday when they trailed 14-0 to Portugal in the first half of their opening encounter, Kenya got off to a better start scoring the first try of the match against Russia through Sammy Oliech before Willy Ambaka sent the match into the break Kenya leading 12-0.

Ambaka was at it again early in the second half putting Kenya 17-0 up but before they could extend that lead Russia managed to get to Kenya’s try line scoring their first try.

Humphrey Kayange however sealed the win for Kenya with a last try of the match sending Kenya through to the quarterfinals.

Kenya will play New Zealand in their last pool match later Saturday afternoon.
