The Kenya Masters Athletics team will participate in the forthcoming 5th Edition of the World Masters Athletics Championships from September 4th to 16th this year at the Coastal city in Malaga, Spain.
Flagging off the 40 member team at the Ministry of Sports headquarters, at Kencom Building, the Ministry’s Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Noor Hassan Noor said the ministry has already booked air tickets, uniforms and will provide the needed allowances.
“We have already alerted the Kenya and Spain Embassies to take care of the team during the championship,” said Noor, saying that Kenya is a sport power house globally, and is looking forward to scoop more medals in the competition.
He at the same time announced that the country will host the under 20 world athletics championship and the world rally championship in the 2020.
“We expect more than 300,000 to participate in the championships and at least 80 million people to watch the event across the world,” added Noor.
Noor observed that sports is the best marketer for tourism and investment in the country, saying that the ministry will continue to support the team in their endeavors.
The Masters Athletics Kenya Interim Secretary General and National Record holder 400m hurdle Rose Tata Muya said the team is determined to get more medals than it did in 2016.
In his remarks, the Athletics Kenya President, Jackson Tuwei said the Masters Athletics is designed for retired veterans who were main active competitors in the world competitions from the age of 35 years to over 100 years.
Tuwei thanked the Sports Ministry and the International flavors and Fragrance organization for supporting the Masters team.
Masters Athletics Championships formally known as Veterans has been in existence since 1975 to 2007 but was not active until 2016 when it made the country proud when it took position 18 out of 180 in the world and number one in Africa.
This is the second time Spain is hosting the championship.
