Kenya wins CECAFA Senior Challenge cup 2017 on penalties

National soccer team Harambee Stars Sunday reclaimed their CECAFA senior Challenge Cup after beating Zanzibar 3-2 on post-match penalties at the Machakos County Stadium.

The two teams had played to 2-2 draw in the regulation and extra time forcing the match into the post-match penalties.

Harambee stars under newly appointed Paul Put started the match with a bang scoring their first goal in the 5TH minute through Ovella Ochieng and was destined for victory but  their hopes were cut short when Kassim Khamis equalized for Zanzibar in the 89th minute, driving the match into extra time.

The two teams had met previously in the group matches of the tournament where they drew 0-0.  Uganda Cranes defeated Burundi 2-1 in the third place playoff match at the same venue.

Kenya last won the Cecafa cup in 2013 in Nairobi, beating Sudan 2-0 in the finals.
