Kenya’s Lionesses humbled at Rio

By Richard Munga

The national rugby women’s sevens team opened their Olympic campaign on a disappointing note after being thrashed 52-0 by giants New Zealand in their first match last evening in Rio, Brazil, before losing 40-7 to France in the second match.

Kenya took on tournament favourites France who had earlier defeated Spain 24-7 in the second pool B match of the Rio Olympic Games.

With the Lionesses targeting a top eight finish that will see them qualify for the HSBC Sevens World Series next season, their medal hopes were crashed by the French, losing 40-7.

The Kenya Lionesses had earlier found the going tough against an experienced New Zealand side, who made it to the try line through Woodman Portia, Mcalister Kaylawell, Nathan-wong Tyla, Broughton Gayle, Williams Niall and Manuel Huriana.

Lionesses head coach Mike Shamia, started with his best squad which featured Doreen Nziwa, Janet Okelo, Irene Otieno and Celestine Masinde.
