Kiambu promotes 1552 County workers

Some 1552 Kiambu County workers cannot hide their joy after were promoted to higher job groups after years of waiting.

Kiambu Governor James Nyoro issued letters of promotion to the 1006 are female and 546 male from the 10 different departments at the County headquarters.

About 85 per cent of the promotions went to health workers from the 36 cadres in county’s health department. The promotion clears all the backlog that has been a source of industrial action among health workers in the county.

Speaking while handing out letters of promotions to the staff from various departments, Governor Nyoro said the special consideration had been given to the health worker as an appreciation for their selfless dedication during last year’s peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our health workers have been in the forefront of the fight against Covid-19 some even lost their lives while serving extended hours but still none of them gave up, this is just a way to appreciate them for a job well done and still doing,” said the Governor.

Nyoro expressed his resolve to improve human resource (HR), which he said remains paramount in his development agenda as a key factor in production.

“HR is the engine that runs our Country, a well appreciated worker means better service to the public, and that’s our greatest role as County Civil servants,” said Nyoro.

On his part the Chairman of the County Public Service Board Allan Mwaura said previously lack of a scheme of service to guide the work force had caused career stagnation for many workers in the county, thereby delaying their promotion and creating the challenge of skill mismatch, but that has since been resolved.

“We have had people who have been on probation for more than 10 years and this was caused by skill mismatch as you could find a plumber working as an accountant … we had to therefore resolve these first hence the delay of promotions,” said Mwaura.

321 makes up the number of senior workers among county workers promoted this year.

Also benefited from the promotions were 1200 ECD teachers who have been receiving stipends for year and Community Health workers who were promised that a process is underway for them to be receiving stipends by the next financial year

Last year about 2089 Kiambu County promoted and retired persons of up to 1993 received their retirement benefits after waiting for years.
