The National boxing team’s trip to the Africa Olympic Games qualifiers is in limbo for lack of funds.

Reliable sources have intimated to Channel One Sports of receiving communication from the Sports Ministry officials directing the Boxing Association to reduce the number of the 13 member squad.

The National boxing team which has been in camp for two weeks now preparing for the Africa Olympic qualifiers set for Cameroon from 9th-12th March in Younde might be forced to give the qualifiers a wide berth after the government indicated that they do not have the Ksh.6.5 million required for the trip.

Meanwhile the boxing team was in high spirits ahead of their departure for the games on 6th March.

Head coach Patrick Maina remained confident that Kenya will qualify a higher number of pugilists to this year’s games than the previous edition in 2012.

The squad has among others AIBA pro boxers Rayton Okwiri,Benson Gicharu and Nick Abaka, Olympic games regular Nick Okoth and three female boxers Christine Ongare,Elizabeth Akinyi and Teresia Wanjiru.

The team has since switched its training from Mathare Depot to a residential camp at ASK showgrounds,Nairobi.
