Laikipia County Assembly commences investigations on expenditure

Laikipia County Assembly Public Accounts Committee has commenced hearings on irregular expenditures in the County Government.

The committee intends to scrutinize the Auditor general’s report dating back to 2013/2014 financial year saying the previous County Assembly failed to do so.

Committee chairman Daniel Mugweru said they will invite Chief Executive officers to respond to audit queries saying it is unfortunate the same didn’t happen when it should have.

It is however not clear how the same will be done since executives who were in office then are no longer in office.

Mugweru says if there are officers that will need to be summoned from the former administration the committee will not hesitate to do so.

He noted that issues of illegalities in procurement procedures were highly disregarded by officers in the Government.

Further there were multiple inter borrowing from one department to the other without approvals from the controller of budget especially in the 2013/2014 financial year.

Mugweru noted that those found to have stolen public funds will not be spared saying the committee will recommend for their prosecution.

This he said will be a lesson to those who have a trend of stealing from the public and thinking that no action will be taken against them.

Laikipia County executive in charge of Finance and County planning Murungi Ndai welcomed the audit saying public resources must be protected at all cost.
