Lyon FC from Township Ward was crowned the champions of Duale Cup tournament after beating Juhudi FC from Galbet Ward 8-7 on penalties after the match had ended in a stalemate during the regulation time at Boystown Primary grounds.
The four-month tournament sponsored by Garissa Township Member of Parliament Aden Duale and organised by Garissa County Football Association had brought together 20 clubs from all the four wards in the constituency.
“We are engaging all the sports stakeholders in my constituency to build and nurture talent among our youth and help in fighting radicalization, drug abuse and extremism” he wrote on his Twitter handle.
All the participating clubs were awarded with the certificates of participation besides receiving cash prizes, trophies, uniforms, balls and medals to both winners and runners up.
Also awarded for trophies were the best player Mohamed Bilal and top scorer Abdirahman Mohamud from Juhudi FC, best goalkeeper Mohamed Hassan from Lyon FC and AC Moral FC as the most disciplined team.
In July this year,the legislator initiated a program aimed at improving the standards of football in the larger Garissa county.
The ranking MP of the 12th Parliament held a meeting with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), Garissa Branch officials resolved to promote the sport in the region.
Garissa, a Kenyan town less known for football produced this year’s winner of the annual East Africa Ligi Ndogo Cup after Berlin FC were crowned U19 champions in a Safaricom sponsored tourney aimed at nurturing talent.
The tourney that was held in Kisamis, Kajiado County attracted only 46 teams from Kenya as Tanzania and Uganda were not able to register any teams due to the pandemic.
