The race to unseat Embu Governor Martin Wambora appears to have gained an unprecedented momentum over the last two weeks.
The political upheavals in Embu county continued on Wednesday with a group of elders drawn from the Mbeere community denouncing an earlier endorsement of Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti barely a week after blessing his Gubernatorial ambitions.
The elders now claim they were coerced to endorse the Senator whose intention to vie for Embu Governor has been met with disapproval from several quarters within the County.
Last week, an altercation between Senator Kivuti and Runyenjes Member of Parliament Cecily Mbarire almost turned physical after the two leaders disagreed on whom among them should vie for Governor under the Jubilee party.
Senator Lenny Kivuti and Runyenjes legislator Cecily Mbarire have openly displayed their interests in taking a stab at the County’s top job.
A memorandum of understanding on who should vie for what position in Embu County may as well impede Senator’s Kivuti’s gubernatorial ambitions, if the latest backtrack by Mbeere elders is anything to go by.
The MOU signed in January 2011 gives the Embu community the Governor’s and women representative position while the Mbeere community gets the Senatorial and Deputy Governor’s seat for a period of 10 years.
The elders allege that attempts to undermine the MoU signed between the Mbeere and Embu would ignite rifts between the two communities, hence disturb the tranquility that has continued to hold for a while now.
