Medical board halts Marie stopes Kenya abortion services

The Kenya Medical and Dentists Board has stopped Marie Stopes Kenya from conducting abortion services in all its clinics across the country.

The medical facility has further been ordered to pull down all its adverts seeking to glorify abortion.

The hospital now says it has suspended safe abortion services but the facility remains opens for other reproductive health services.

It has been a spirited campaign by one Ann Kioko through her organization CitizensGO.

Kioko irked by adverts beamed by Marie Stopes clinic bordering of glorify abortion.

Adverts that led her seeking intervention from the Ministry of Health, the Kenya Medical and dentist board and the British where Marie Stopes funding comes from.

Of concern was that the clinic was offering abortion on a click of a phone charging as low as 5000 shillings a move that many claimed was eroding the morals of youth.

Following complaints the Kenya Medical and Dentist Board swung into action investigating the alleged claims.

Indeed when the number provided in the advert was called the hospital directed the call to a clinic where abortion was to be procured for the said fee.

The campaign ran on the radio stations, billboards as well as on social media.

Some of the statements in the campaign include ‘hata chali yako akiruka ball….we gatchu’ , ‘hata ile time P2 imefail, don’t stress we gatchu’ meaning when a partner denies the pregnancy or where emergency contraceptives fail, one should not be worried because Marie Stopes would take care of it.

Marie Stopes Kenya Country Director Dana Tilson says the facility has suspended safe abortion services at the request of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, but maintained all Marie Stopes Clinics countrywide remain open and will continuing to provide essential family planning, maternal health and general medical services.

The statement further says Marie Stopes Kenya has been championing reproductive healthcare for Kenyan women, men and families since 1985 and works hard to ensure that no woman or girl should needlessly lose her life due to an unsafe abortion and that it is proud of the life-changing, life-saving services its teams provide to Kenyans every single day.

Kioko says it is not enough to suspend abortion services at Marie stopes but demanded that its board members and directors be arrested and charged in a court of law for violating the Kenya constitution.
