Voting is currently underway in the Migori senatorial mini-poll.
The by-election was occasioned by the death of Senator Ben Oluoch after a battle with throat cancer in June this year.
The exercise kicked off smoothly and on time Monday morning.
So far voter turnout is at about 40 percent but is expected to rise in the coming hours.
Migori County has 388,633 registered voters. The five candidates vying for the seat are businessman Eddy Oketch of the Federal Party of Kenya, Ochillo Ayacko of Orange Democratic Movement, Peter Jobando (Green Congress Party) and Solomon Hodo Rugaria (People’s Democratic Party).
Samwel Otieno and Dickson Ogolla are also contesting as independent candidates. Nyanza Regional Police Coordinator Leonard Katana has assured of tight security in and outside the polling centers, with officers sending away idlers.
Commissioner Abdi Guliye of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission says all mechanisms to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free transparent and fair manner have been put in place.
