National Assembly’s Energy and ICT committee chairperson Jamleck Kamau says Ministries must prudently utilize 2015/2016 pending allocations before the next budget.
The challenge coming as Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Managing Director Waithaka Waihenya told the committee that the corporation needs more funds to enable it fulfill its obligations as a public broadcaster.
Officers from the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology as well as heads of parastatals under the ministry and members of the National Assembly committee on ICT and Energy are in Mombasa to deliberate on the ministry’s budget allocation ahead of the budget.
Kamau says they are evaluating spending of funds allocated in the last financial year to ensure there are no pending funds.
Speaking to the media during the workshop, KBC MD said public broadcasters are funded by the state adding that the public corporation has requested 1.3 billion shillings for the 2016/2017 financial year.
Waihenya said operating costs at KBC are much higher than the normal allocation the corporation gets from the government.
He said that most of the equipment is now obsolete and as they seek to modernize them, the corporation will require additional funds.
