The Ministry of Lands is set to digitize 18 land registries across the country before the end of the year.

Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi says the digitization will help reduce cases of fraud and cartels that have been a nightmare in the sector.

Kaimenyi said once the registries are digitized Kenyans will be able to transact land matters online, put to the end the long queues being witnessed in land offices across the country and improve service delivery.

“With digitisation of land registries, Kenyans shall be guaranteed of effectiveness because of easier storage and retrieval of land documents and details from even the comfort of their homes or offices,” the CS said.

He said 83 percent of schools in the country have not collected their title deeds for their institution urging them to do so.

“From 2013 the ministry targeted to process 3million title deeds and to date 2.4million titles are ready for collection though owners are reluctant to collect them,” noted Kaimenyi.

“In some areas over 60 percent of the processed titles have not been collected. Reports are that some land owners have feared being dispossessed of or attacked by their relatives demanding for subdivision of the land,” he added.

At the same time, the CS has encouraged heads of schools to ensure they acquire the title deeds for their learning institutions.

He further encouraged schools to fence their compounds for safety of their learners and property.

“Those fond of grabbing public land will have rough time this moment. We are working closely with the ministry of Interior and National Coordination together with other arms of government to return illegally acquired lands to their rightful owners,” he maintained.
