Minnows Gambia sail through at the expense of Ghana

Gambia U20 beat favorites Ghana U20 1-2, to qualify alongside Morocco automatically in the AFCON U20 championship and, relegate Ghana into the raffle of the best 3rd ranked side.

Ghana got off to a bright start as they threatened to run riot by three attempts in the opening five minutes before Issahaku Fataw, produced a ferocious left footed strike to the bottom right corner to give them the lead.

Gambia managed to survive the onslaught and ventured forward seeking an equalizer which came in the 16th as Kajally Drammeh, fashioned some yards and planted the ball past the hapless Ghanaian goalkeeper.

It’s almost as if the Gambians had noticed the Asante Kotoko’s shot stopper weakness as forward Jallow scored a sumptuous free kick from 30 yards, to give the Gambians the lead and, almost scored from a similar spot.

Ghana threatened to equalize but somehow fell short as the Gambians changed their gameplan and resorted to soaking the pressure and hitting them in the odd counter attack.

It was more of the same and better game management from the West Africans as they held to sail through even after they went a man down late in the game.

They gain automatic qualification to the next round.
