More charges for Omwenga’s murder suspects Obure, Ouko

The main suspects in the murder of businessman Kevin Omwenga were Friday charged with more criminal counts.

The prosecution pressed fresh charges against businessman Chris Obure and his bodyguard Robert Ouko who appeared before Magistrate Sinkiyian Tobiko.

Obure was charged with failing to secure a firearm and ammunition contrary to the firearms act while Ouko was charged with two counts namely being in possession of a firearm illegally.

They denied the charges and were released on a Kshh50,000 cash bail each or an alternative bond of Ksh50,000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on September 30. The two were Wednesday charged with the murder of Omwenga.

The duo will spend the weekend in police custody awaiting a bail hearing for the murder case on Monday next week.

State witness

Obure had moved to court to challenge the murder charges against him arguing that he should instead serve as a state witness.

He had asked the Court to withdraw the charges against him saying he shouldn’t be an accused person in the first place.

Through his Lawyer Danstan Omari argues that his aide Ouko took his gun from his office without his consent.

CCTV footage from Obure’s office indeed shows Ouko in possession of the gun which has already been identified as the murder weapon.
