Mt. Kenya counties to revive old Nairobi – Nanyuki railway

County governments in the Mt. Kenya region among them Nyeri, Kiambu, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Nanyuki and Murang’a have pledged to fund the revival of the old Nairobi- Nanyuki railway line.

The deal which will cost 25 billion shillings is in partnership with Kenya Railways, and is expected to facilitate passenger and cargo train services.

Operationalization of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) along the Mombasa- Nairobi highway was a herald of socio economic growth along the route.

The eight county governments have pledged to contribute 100 million shillings each towards the implementation of the 25 billion shillings project.

The money will be used in upgrading the old tracks as well as in buying new locomotives.

The railway project is expected to boost inter-county trade in the Mt. Kenya region.

The governors are keen to extend the railway line to Isiolo County and later on link it to the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport corridor.

The Current railway line is the colonial era 50- pound-load type, capable of carrying three light locomotives.

The rehabilitation will see it upgraded it to 80-pound load so that a single train can carry 1,400 tonnes of goods.
