NACADA arrests bar owners in Lamu

National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has arrested several bar owners operating illegally in Mpeketoni, Lamu County.

The operation led by NACADA Coast regional manager George Karisa, said the operation is aimed at eradicating illicit brews within coast province especially Lamu and Kwale counties which are mostly affected.

During the operation, a number of bars and pubs within the area were found running their businesses with expired licenses which many were backdated from 2017.

Karisa said that the problem was brought about by the areas county government which failed to pass regulatory laws against alcohol consumption.

Lamu County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri said that they had conducted operations in Mpeketoni and Hindi and were set to continue with the exercise at Lamu Island, Witu among other small towns within the county.

He further stated that since the operation was announced they have managed to destroy over 400 litres of local alcohol within the area.
