National govt disburses over Ksh.1 trillion to counties

The national government has so far disbursed over 1 trillion shillings to the county governments in the past five years the outgoing Devolution Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mwangi Kiunjuri has confirmed.

Kiunjuri who is moving to the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries ministry while handing over the office to the incoming Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa Monday said that the government is disbursing over 30 percent of the national budget to the counties in efforts to spur growth and development at the grassroots.

Kiunjuri said that all functions assigned by the constitution to the counties have been transferred and counties are fully operational and are now mandated to deal with local developments.

To address the legal challenges facing the counties and the relationship between the county and national governments, Kiunjuri said that 51 county model laws have been developed to improve the quality of legislation.

On his part, Wamalwa said that they have worked with Kiunjuri in the inter-ministerial fight against drought and he is pleased they will be working together even as they move to different dockets.

Meanwhile, Kiunjuri has promised Kenyans that he will soon bring down the cost of maize flour.

Speaking in Laikipia, the CS said that his main goal is to make the country food secure by increasing acreage of cultivated land within the nation.

Kiunjuri said that this would be achieved through increase of crop production through subsidized fertliser, making more land arable through irrigation as well as supporting farmers to diversify to alternative crops.

Kiunjuri made these remarks after Laikipia Senator John Kinyua challenged him to make sure cost of maize flour reduces to Sh80 per two-kg- packet.

Kinyua said Kenyans are suffering and with President Uhuru appointing Kiunjuri as one leader who will spearhead his four-agenda (food Security), he should toil to see this is met…

However, Kiunjuri vowed to make this happen within the shortest time possible and asked leaders to shun from divisive politics and instead concentrate on making Kenya better…

The two accompanied by other Laikipia leaders had attended a fundraiser in aid of the construction of a Mji wa Wazee in Nanyuki spearheaded by the catholic church priests…

The leaders including Kiunjuri thanked President Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto for appointing him Agriculture CS.
