New ‘Pirates’ trailer debuts without Johnny Depp

By Mashable/Evelyne Wareh

The first teaser trailer for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales dropped on Sunday.

Focused on the horrifying figure of a rotting Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), the short spot is truly terrifying, and just in time for Halloween fans to remember how good the Pirates films can be.

Usually, the Pirates films focus on fun, with the dark bits only woven in at choice moments, but this time it seems the producers are leaning into the current boom in horror genre television and film (Walking Dead, etc.).

However, the only quick look of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) we see is through an illustration on a wanted poster. This early Depp-less approach may be the studio’s way of giving the actor’s recent ugly divorce drama a little more time to play out until fans can reset and try to focus on his swashbuckling pirate character that has earned the studio billions.

The film is set to hit theaters in May 2017.
