The County Government of Bomet has supplied a consignment comprising pesticides and other equipment meant to combat armyworms that have invaded parts of Bomet County.
The pests were reported two weeks ago in parts of Chepalungu Sub County and have since spread to other parts including Bomet East, Sotik and Bomet Central Sub Counties.
The pests have been estimated to have wreaked havoc on over 200 hectares of crop maize plantations.
They are believed to have come from the neighbouring Narok County and were first reported at Kobolwo area in Chepalungu before spreading to the said parts of the County.
According to the County Executive in Charge of Agriculture Rose Langat, the infestation would expose farmers to untold losses if swift intervention would not effected.
Langat said it was the responsibility of her department to ensure that the pests were wiped out to avoid losing the expected bumper harvests from the subsidized fertilizers.
She said apart from the pesticides, affected farmers have been issued with spraying equipment as well as personal protective gear.
The CEC said the efforts were a combined effort between the County Government of Bomet and the National Government through the State Department of crop protection.
