Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has Sunday condoled with the families of the 14 people who lost their lives in the accident involving a lorry at the Kakwamunyen area along Lodwar- Kakuma Road.
In his message, Lomorukai said, “our hearts go out to the families of the victims of yesterday's devastating accident involving a lorry travelling from Lodwar to Lokitaung. May they find solace and comfort in this time of immense sorrow.”
The Governor also urged citizens to pray for a quick recovery of 12 other passengers who were injured in the same accident
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he added.
Lomorukai was referring to an accident that occurred at 10 pm on Saturday after a lorry veered off the road to avoid hitting a camel that was crossing the road.
The lorry that was being driven by a 33-year-old adult male at the time had 26 passengers on board as well as assorted goods.
The 12 passengers who sustained various injuries are currently at the Lodwar County and Referral Hospital.
The bodies of the diseased were also moved to the same facility mortuary for preservation, awaiting autopsy.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was a result of the heavy weight of the vehicle from the goods and the passengers onboard.
Police say that due to overloading, the vehicle overturned and landed in a culvert on the right side of the road occasioning the injuries of the passengers and the vehicle extensively being damaged.
The lorry has been towed to Lodwar Police Station pending inspection, and comprehensive investigations into the cause of the accident.
