Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore Friday made a strong case for regional integration and cooperation on labour migration issues which she described as vital and requiring concerted efforts by all countries.

“Kenya has made tremendous progress in the implementation of the adopted roadmap of this Regional Ministerial Forum through various programmes and projects,” she said

According to CS Bore, labour migration requires restructuring to make it responsive to the needs of all migrant workers.

“My colleagues from East and Horn of Africa Governments and the International Organization for Migration renewed our Commitment to Labour Mobility, Gender-sensitive Migration Governance, and Regional Integration for Development and Economic Growth,” she said

She disclosed that member countries had agreed to strengthen existing mechanisms especially surrounding bilateral labour agreements, ethical recruitment, migrant workers’ rights, skills development and job creation. Youth employment, return and reintegration of migrant workers, gender and diaspora, private sector engagement, and consular services.

“We committed to establish new Technical Working Group sub-groups to give gender, private sector engagement, and migrant workers’ health, mechanisms for the enforcement of ethical recruitment standards, and promised to continue training private recruitment agencies,” she said
