NextGen Fashion Weekend is a subsidiary event of Kenya Fashion Awards that provides a platform for upcoming designers

NextGen is a subsidiary event of Kenya Fashion Awards that provides a platform for Upcoming Designers and Fashion Design Students from different colleges and universities across the country to showcase their designs and creativity, as well as compete and network with key industry players. It also offers a platform for workshop participants to undertake their practicals.

The annual celebration of fashion excellence honours individuals and brands within the East African region that have made incredible contributions to the global fashion industry. The event brings together stakeholders to celebrate the incredible performances by upcoming and established industry professionals.

The winners are selected through a judging process and are awarded during the Awards Gala later in the year. The students are specifically given challenges; this year’s challenge was to create designs inspired by renowned fashion designers globally.

The event, through the designs showcased, highlighted emerging designers’ creativity and fashion sense. NextGen aims to create a fair opportunity for every emerging designer in the industry to have a moment of experience, to be in the spotlight, and build confidence.

Mr Atman Ngau, Co-Director of Kenya Fashion Awards said, “The youth exhibit a natural creative curiosity and inventiveness as seen in the music, film, fashion and craft that they are successfully engaged in. As the creative industry grows there is a need for clear guidance so as to tap into their creativity and reap from the industry.”

The creative economy is an important development dimension that can foster economic growth, job creation, export earnings while promoting social inclusion, cultural diversity and human development. Kenya Fashion Awards through the event has been nurturing and identifying emerging talents in the local fashion industry for four years now.

The awards gala is set for the first quarter of 2020.
