Nguna Cup Tournament has attracted 114 teams

A total of 98 men and 16 women teams battling for two overall trophies are taking part in Nguna Cup tournament which kicked off on Saturday in Mwingi West,Kitui County.

The tournament sponsored by Mwingi West Member of Parliament Charles Nguna has for the last 19 years been eradicating illiteracy, poverty and helping the needy access basic human needs within the former larger Mwingi District.

“CNN tournament has for the many years organized and funded football club competition in the areas of its jurisdiction that has seen alot of young talents grow.

The impact has been felt by the participants and the community at large more-so in orchestrating campaigns against drug abuse, early marriages and school drop outs. As a sportsman I am impressed with the progress so far” he said.

The KYPA lawmaker said he will continue laying out strategies in place to foster and enlarge the scope of operation in order to tap the potentials among the young boys and girls in the sporting industry in his constituency.

Nguna who is also a National Assembly Sports Committee member has been pushing for complete  re-opening of sports activities in the country after they were partially banned by the government over the coronavirus pandemic.

He said resumption of sports activities require maximum discipline and draconian guidelines to ensure safety of players and also prevent infection rate rise adding that Kenya has done little for the anticipation of the reopening of the sector which is bound to lose close to Sh5 billion this year owing to the recess caused by the crisis.

“Returning to action will require input of all the stakeholders and we are ready to advise on the best way to revive the sector. We’re aware our athletes are suffering but we will not risk reopening at the expense of our health,’’ he added.

The overall winners will take home prize money of Kshs 150,000 with other sporting equipment including balls and a set of uniforms.
