ODM: IEBC should give time frame for party preliminaries

The Orange Democratic Movement now demands that IEBC must give a time frame and a deadline within which all political parties should hold their primaries to nominate candidates for the various seats contestable in the 2017 general election.

The party wants the involvement of the IEBC in political parties’ nominations to be optional such that political parties with the capacity to conduct their own primaries can do so freely.

ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale said in a statement Thursday that ODM position remains that the IEBC should allow parties to hold their primaries at own discretion but within the deadline set by the electoral body.

Party leader Raila Odinga had said political parties should have a free hand in deciding how to nominate their candidates.

Odinga said that the proposal that the IEBC be given a role in conducting party nominations amounts to “micromanaging political parties.”

The party is resisting a proposal by Jubilee coalition that nominations in political parties be conducted by the electoral body for credibility purposes.
