The Registrar of Political Parties has called on the ODM Party to respond to concerns raised by Presidential Candidate Jimmy Wanjigi ahead of the 2022 General elections.
In a letter to the Registrar, Wanjagi claimed that ODM Secretary General and the National Elections Board are acting contrary to the party constitution regarding the manner in which the party is conducting elections across the country
“As a life member of this party and a presidential ticket contestant, I would like to raise alarm that the conduct of the so-called elections will sabotage democracy and consign ODM to the footnotes of history in very short order,” He argues.
Wanjigi says plans to have office bearers selected by some form of consensus is vague, improper, and clearly flies in the face of the mood of members who wish to participate in a transparent democratic process to reinvigorate the party for the 2022 elections.
According to Wanjigi the party constitution requires that officials are elected every five years to give the Party an opportunity to reinvigorate its structures in readiness for the General Election.
Wanjigi says the Secretary General indeed confirmed to him two weeks ago that the party should have undertaken these elections last year, but this was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
He claims the party is conducting party elections in undercover fashion saying the processes at the grassroots and branch levels must be conducted transparently since these officials will comprise the National Delegates Conference that will elect national officials and the presidential ticketholder.
Wanjigi now wants the Party to provide him with a certified list of Party Delegates who are to attend the National Delegates Convention to nominate the Party’s Presidential Candidate ahead of the 2022 national General Elections.
He also wants a confirmation of the timelines to the Delegates Conference to nominate our Party’s Presidential Candidate, indication as to whether the Party intends to have any activities, including televised Party Presidential debates and, if so, when these may be had as well as the timing and mechanism for party primaries at the ward, constituency, and county levels in order to allow members to interrogate the leadership qualities and political intent of candidates across the board.
“One of the goals of offering my candidature for the party ticket is to support the party in enhancing internal democracy in a more transparent, accountable, and people-driven process. The ultimate character of true democracy is to let the people decide their leaders.”
