One person has died after reportedly consuming suspected adulterated liquor in Nyahururu town, Laikipia.
Laikipia County Health Chief officer Dr. Donald Mugoi confirmed that nine other people are admitted to the Nyahururu County Referral hospital in critical condition.
The ten men were part of a group of people who are said to have consumed toxic alcohol at a birthday party celebration at a pub in the town.
According to Dr. Felix Masongo, who is in charge of the Nyahururu County Referral hospital emergency unit, all the affected were taken to the hospital by a police land cruiser after they were spotted lying beside the road in various parts of the town.
“Every one of the ten men arrived at the facility Sunday morning vomiting while complaining of stomach complications.” He said
Dr. Masongo noted that the medics could not immediately confirm the substance in the liquor or the quantity the ten had consumed.
He said that it was vital for the patients to be retained at the hospital for monitoring since the suspected chemical poisoning is known to cause optic problems after some days.
The Health Chief Officer Donald Mugoi called upon individuals who may have consumed the suspected adulterated alcohol to go to the hospital immediately for testing, adding that the symptoms of the alcohol poisoning are noticeable within 24 to 48 hours.
“We urge those who might have consumed the liquor to come to the hospital. Coming to the hospital does not mean that they will be arrested but to be treated so that they can be okay,” he said
Nyahururu Sub County Police Commander Mary Kiema said investigations into what might have transpired have been launched.
