Opuntia is one of the most widespread and naturalized plants in the arid and semi-arid areas

Conservationists in Laikipia have begun the mechanical removal of an invasive Opuntia Cactus which has occupied about 80% of grazing land for livestock and wildlife. Known to some farmers as the “devil’s cactus,” the invasive plant, which depletes soil fertility and water resources, and reduces the diversity of plants and animals, has invaded more than 500 square kilometers in the county.
