Over 700 athletes from across the country are expected to take part in the 13th edition of the Imenti South Road Race set for this Sunday in Meru.
Among them will be top-rated athletes including last year’s winner Moses Koech, Morris Munene, who was the second runner up last year, former World Half Marathon silver medallist and 2011 Rotterdam marathon champion Phillis Ongori, Maryanne Wangari and Polline Njeru.
The 15km road race, which will be flagged off at Nkubu stadium in Meru, was today morning boosted to a tune of 1 million shillings from Safaricom which will go towards preparation for the event.
Part of the sponsorship will go towards prize money where winners in the senior races will pocket 100,000 shillings each while second and third-placed finishers will take home 50,000 and 25,000 shillings respectively.
The top ten winners in all the categories will be awarded cash prizes with the top three local athletes from the main race also receiving 20,000; 10,000 and 6,000 shillings respectively.
