Performance scorecard; Kenya’s top-ranked Senators

Senators Mutula Kilonzo of Makueni, Elgeyo Mrakwet’s Kipchumba Murkomen, Steve Lelegwe of Samburu, Kwale’s Boy Issa Juma and Cleophas Malala of Kakamega county have been ranked as the top performing senators in the country by Infotrak.

Senator Fatuma Adan Dullo of Isiolo was ranked as the top performing female lawmaker in several categories among first term senators. Indeed, the outcome further shows that a good number of first term senators have out-performed majority of their counterparts who are serving their second term in office.

In the latest survey, Mutula topped his fellow lawmakers on the question as to who was well perceived to have had great engagement with the electorate at 66.4 percent followed by Murkomen at 58.8 and Lelegwe, Juma, and Malala at 57.2,   55.4, and 54.8 percent respectively.

The survey conducted between November 2019 and January 2020 sought to find out the electorate’s overall rating of the performance of their elected leaders since their election in 2017.

“While all the leaders have elaborate job descriptions which include and not limited to legislation, the fact that they sought the mandate of the electorate means that the perception of their performance should be largely determined by their engagement with the same electorate.” Infotrak stated

Senators who made it to the top ten include Aaron Cheruiyot of Kericho, Tharaka Nithi’s Kithure Kindiki, Irungu Kang’ata of Murang’a, who is also the Senate Majority Whip and Samuel Poghisio (Senate Majority leader) of West Pokot.

The survey comes a fortnight after another poll ranking governors’ performance was met with a lot of rebuke from a number of county chiefs. In October 28 survey, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya was ranked as the best performing county chief in the country by Infotrak.

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi dismissed the findings claiming they were fabricated.
