The 2007/2008 post-election violence victims from Nyanza region are still crying foul due to failure by the National government to fully compensate them.
Speaking in Kisumu on Thursday, the Nyanza Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’S) forum have given the government 14 days to address the issue failure to which they will hold demonstrations.
The chairman of the forum, Jared Otieno Odhiambo said they have been neglected for too long and demanded that the government pays them as their counterparts from other regions. “We have decided that after 14 days, we shall hold demonstrations until we are paid,” he added.
The IDP’s from Siaya, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Homabay and Migori are appealing to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to intervene and have them compensated like their counterparts from Central and Rift valley regions.
“Others were compensated to a tune of Ksh 400,000, settled on land and they have since built homes, but we from the Nyanza region have been neglected,” lamented Nerea Atieno Otieno.
The IDPs lamented that they have been deserted by both National and local leaders despite having suffered during the post-election period. “We also urge our governors to come out and help us, we have suffered a lot,” lamented Atieno.
The IDPs were only given Ksh 10, 000 as initial compensation.
