Police disperse rioting locals in Kisumu

Anti riot police officers Monday morning dispersed rioting locals who had lit bonfires at Otonglo area in Kisumu to protest the demolitions of houses Sunday evening by Kenya Railways Corporation.

Kisumu County Police Commander Peter Kattam who spoke to KBC on phone said police had to intervene in order to restore order.

Kattam appealed to those affected by the demolitions to raise their concerns with the Kenya Railways Corporations instead of inconveniencing other road users by blocking the highway.

The Kenya Railways Corporation had demolished homes and shops in Kibos, Muhoroni, Koru, Lela and Otonglo areas to pave way for the rehabilitation of the railway line from Nakuru to Kisumu.

At Otonglo, the recently launched construction of Otonglo market by Governor Anyang Nyong’o was also demolished.

Governor Nyong’o has condemned the demolitions saying he was kept in the dark by the Kenya Railways.
