Police impersonator to be arraigned in court Monday

A man masquerading as police officer will on Monday be arraigned in court for charges of impersonation.

On Saturday, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested 40-year old Gregory Simiyu Mabele who had donned fatigues belonging to the Administration Police Service (APS) conducting his self assigned and illegal night patrols in Lang’ata.

“Gregory Simiyu Mabele, donned in fatigues belonging to our sister service APS, impersonated a Police Officer and started conducting his self assigned, illegal night patrols in Langata’s Southlands area,” said DCI through a statement.

Gregory Simiyu Mabele will answer to charges of being in unlawful possession of government stores contrary to Section 324 (2) and Impersonating a Police Officer contrary to Section 101 (1) (b) of the National Police Service Act.

The suspect was arrested past curfew hours on Saturday, as he walked around the Southlands suburbs, pretending to be offering public safety and security services.

Detectives suspect that he is part of a wider cabal of criminals, who pose as police and betray the trust of unsuspecting members of the public, by defrauding and stealing from them.
