Preliminary works at Thiba Dam construction site commences

Preliminary works at the Thiba Dam construction site in Kirinyaga County are in progress.

The initial works include setting up of the contractor’s camp and workshops as well as mobilizing of equipment and personnel in readiness for the actual construction of the dam.

The National Irrigation Board Thiba Dam Project Manager Stephen Mutinda says the dam project is on course and is expected to be completed within the set timelines.

The vast rich land next to Thiba River almost feels like a ghost village as many residents have already vacated to pave way for the construction of Thiba Dam.

Some of the construction works currently ongoing include the contractor’s camp, workshops and spillway.

The board says Thiba River is adequate to supply the dam every season. Measures have been put in place to ensure safety of the dam.

Kirinyaga County Deputy Governor Peter Ndamberi says the county government is already working out a mechanism to ensure all rice farmers are mapped out to enable them access subsidized fertilizer to improve production.

The county government is also looking to collaborate with Italy to try out dry rice farming.

The construction of Thiba Dam will facilitate two crop seasons annually doubling production at the Mwea Irrigation Scheme 160,000 tones.
