Prison warders at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on Sunday night thwarted an attempt by a section of prisoners to escape from the facility.
According to the Deputy Prisons Director General Benjamin Njoka, a quick response by the wardens stops what would have been the worst prison break at the maximum security prison.
He said the attempt was masterminded by two prisoners who had earlier in July 2013 escaped from Shimo La Tewa prison before being recaptured.
No one was injured during the incident. Gunshots and sirens characterized the Sunday night incident at the Kamiti Maximum Prison, after hard-core convicts tried to escape from the facility cells.
Two prisoners identified as Cosmas Mogaka and Hassan Mangale were behind the foiled escape plot.
Njoka says the duo serving life sentences for robbery had escaped from Shimo la Tewa prison by scaling up the prison walls using planks of wood.
This time round they mobilized other convicts in cutting metal grills of their cells over days at Kamiti until Sunday night when they tried to get out.
The incident happened as police launched investigations into the cause of death of a medical officer in charge of Kamiti Maximum Prison in unclear circumstances.
His body was found inside his house within the prison compound.
Deputy Director of Health Services at the Kenya Prisons Dr Charles Isiaho described his death as a big loss to the prisons service owing to his experience in dealing with inmates.
The body of the medical officer has been taken to the mortuary for postmortem.
It is not yet clear whether the death of the medical officer is in any way related to the attempted escape by inmates.
