Probe into Ksh 9b NYS scandal continues

Several people suspected to be behind the National Youth Service (NYS) Ksh9M scandal are currently being probed at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation.

The exercise is being conducted in camera.  A team of six detectives with expertise in matters finance have been mandated to carry out the investigation.

Among those summoned are NYS officials including supplies management officials, accountants, and procurement officers as well as suppliers and directors of companies with NYS contract.

National Youth Service (NYS) officers in charge of Procurement Finance and Accounting have been sent on compulsory leave to allow for investigations into the Ksh 9 billion scandal facing the youth agency.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Sunday, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Prof. Margaret Kobia said the affected officers should proceed on leave with immediate effect.

Reports indicate that Principal Secretary Lilian Omollo and NYS Director Richard Ndubai who stepped aside last week are among those summoned for questioning Monday.

The Ksh9 billion was allegedly siphoned from the institution in the last three years in a well-orchestrated scheme involving senior government officials and ghost suppliers.
