Registration officials put on notice over corruption allegations

Civil registration officials in Garissa County have been put on notice over allegations of rampant corruption and misuse of public office.  

North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohammed said also on the radar are chiefs and vetting committees adding an investigations team has already been put in place to establish if claims that residents are forced to bribe to acquire identification cards are indeed true.

The North Eastern Regional Commissioner warned that he will not hesitate to sack and prosecute any government official found to have been implicated in the abuse of office.

The development comes after claims by county residents of extortion by public officers, especially in Daadab and Garissa to be issued with identity cards.

Speaking when he addressed security teams and members of the Nyumba Kumi Initiative from the county, Birik further warned civil registration officials who collude to issue identification cards to outsiders will equally face the law.

He urged the nyumba kumi initiative to work with the recently recruited National Police Reservist to ensure they keep a close vigil on anyone seem to be a stranger in their villages.
