A rescue center for girls escaping from forced marriages and female genital mutilation has been set up in Eldama Ravine as stakeholders in the fight against the retrogressive cultural rite.

The initiative by the County Government will among others provide a platform for alternative rite of passage.

Female genital mutilation and early marriages have remained a bane especially among pastoralist communities.

In Baringo County and especially in Tiaty Sub County, the vices have seen hundreds of young girls drop out of school.

Recently a ten year old girl made the headlines when she was rescued after being married by three different men.

She was among 16 others rescued in Tiaty Sub County. The rescue centre in solian, Eldama ravine will now assist the high number of girls who escape their homes and have no place to seek refuge.

Baringo woman representative Gladwel Cheruiyot calling on interior cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi to take action against provincial administrators who collude and allow the practice to continue in their areas of jurisdiction.

Her sentiments were echoed by anti FGM chairperson, Agnes Pereiyo who called on all the actors to jointly come together and fight against the vice.
