High jumper Mathew Sawe is the latest addition to Team Kenya that’s headed for the Olympic Games after he attained qualification through the World Athletics ranking System.
By the close of the qualifying window on midnight of 29th June 2021 Sawe was ranked 24th which secured him a slot at the Tokyo Olympic games slated for July 23rd-8th August.
The qualification of Sawe brings to two field event athletes in addition to close to 40 track athletes who were selected this month during the national athletics trials at Moi Kasarani Stadium and are set to represent Kenya at the forthcoming Olympic Games..
African and Commonwealth games javelin record holder Julius Yego is the second field athlete in the Olympic bound squad. Mathew Sawe who won the African title during the 2018 games in Asaba ,Nigeria attained the Olympic qualification mark of 2.33 metres.
He was ranked 24th by end of entry period. A national Olympic Committee, NOC, could enter up to 3 qualified athletes in the men’s high jump event if all athletes meet the entry standard or qualify by ranking during the qualifying period.
