Samburu County hit by shortage of TB vaccine

Hospitals in Samburu county are facing a shortage in BCG vaccine following a delay by the national government to supply the basic vaccine.

BCG vaccine prevents children against tuberculosis disease.

According to Samburu Central sub county public health nurse who is also in charge of vaccines in the county Josphat Lenguris, the shortage of the vaccine is being experienced in different hospitals and dispensaries across the country.

“We usually get our vaccines from Nakuru and for the past one month it has not been there and that is why we have been suffering from the shortage,” he said.

Lenguris added, “We don’t have the vaccine in our stores and even at county referral hospital for now but we have communication that the vaccine is available at the Nairobi depot. We will distribute it as soon as arrives in Nakuru,” he said.

The officer said that coverage for BCG vaccination in the county is above 90 per cent.
