Senate committee grills Matiang’i over senators arrests

Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’I, Director of Criminal of Investigations George Kinoti and Inspector of General Police Hillary Mutyambai Wednesday appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations over the Monday arrests of senators.

The senior government officials were summoned to explain the circumstances under which Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, Samburu’s Dr. Steve Lelegwe, and Dr. Christopher Lang’at of Bomet were picked from their Nairobi residences and driven to their home counties to record statements.

The three senators were later released from police custody. The senators were arrested on the day the Senate was expected to take a vote on the contentious County revenue sharing formula.

The senators protested against alleged intimidation by security agencies forcing Speaker Kenneth Lusaka to direct the security committee to summon Interior CS, DCI director, and the IG.

The Security committee chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji however barred the media from covering the proceedings.
