Senate Justice Committee cancels meeting with Chebukati

The Senate’s justice and legal affairs committee has called off a meeting with embattled IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati As well as his two other Commissioners.

The cancellation came as the three were on their way to parliament to address issues pertaining to present state of affairs at the electoral agency.

Pressure is however mounting on the IEBC chairperson as well as the two commissioners to resign and pave way for the restructuring of the commission.

Chebukati together with commissioners Ayub Guliye and Boya Molu were scheduled to appear before justice and legal affairs committee of the senate Friday morning, after several other scheduled meetings failed to take place last week.

In a sudden twist of events, the Committee cancelled the meeting without giving a reason yet the three under-fire officials of the electoral agency had confirmed their availability.

IEBC confirmed the cancellation through twitter saying “We were on our way to honor an invitation by Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights for a meeting this morning when they called to call it off.”

The events this morning notwithstanding, a section of leaders are pushing for the removal of Chebukati, Guliye and Molu from office without delay.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri says the remaining commissioners lack the moral authority to conduct the affairs of the commission with diligence.

His remarks comes barely a week afte vice chairperson Connie Nkatha Maina and commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat resigned from the commission saying they have lost confidence on the leadership of Chebukati.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua say the Commission can’t operate as currently constituted since it can’t even raise the required quorum to transact business.

They have urged Chebukati and the two commissioners still in office to vacate office to enable Parliament to restructure the Commission.
